Description

Tachycineta bicolor is a proficient insect-eater, catching even the most agile insects in mid-flight. They are cavity nesters, and take well to birdhouses in treed areas or on posts.

If you have any in your area, try to get hold of some small downy feathers in springtime, when they are making their nests. Toss them into the wind, and delight in their graceful swooping; usually ending with them heading back to the nest box or house with a prized bit of bedding.

They are common throughout most of North America, from Mexico to Canada's Arctic.

Captured on top of a fencepost birdhouse on my farm in Saskatchewan, Canada.

O.O I spent 3 months in Saskatoon two summers ago studying Tree Swallows. I love your photo - the iridescence was captured beautifully! I got to work with these guys: [link] and it was fantastic!
